While we were
getting ready to hold our bagging event, a true
disaster was in the making in Navajo and
neighboring Coconio and Gila Counties. Wildfires
produced by lightning strikes
were spreading and causing unimaginable damage
to local communities.
Thank You AZ Blue decided to do something to
help, so we put out the call to collect
donations of water, fruit, snack items, and
drinks such as Gatorade and Propel. Our
community
came together, and as we loaded 2 U-haul
vehicles with the water and over 700 goodie bags
to carry up through Navajo County during our
bagging event, we were overwhelmed with
the donations and generosity of our members. The
spirit of giving truly does live on in everyone!
Two of us delivered throughout Navajo County,
leaving the Phoenix area on Thursday evening,
June 24. We traveled up to Holbrook both of us
loaded down in the truck beds
and the U-hauls. I cannot say enough great
things about Officer Koons from the Holbrook
Police Department. He was waiting for us at
10:30 PM with helpers to unload all of the water
cases and snacks for firefighters and 1st
responders. He helped coordinate with other
departments regarding our deliveries, and he
opened up the Holbrook station so we could park
the U-hauls overnight behind locked gates. The
Holbrook department is small, but the men and
women who work there truly are a part of the
community.
In addition to Penny, Theresa, Mike and me
stopping in at Holbrook, we also left early in
the morning on Friday, June 25 to deliver to
Navajo Nation. We were met with a beautiful
ceremony,
meeting the President of Navajo Nation, the
Chief of Police, and Miss Navajo Nation. We also
drove through beautiful northern Arizona as we
visited the Hopi Reservation. On Saturday,
Mike and I left Holbrook behind and headed south
down through Strawberry, Pinetop, Show Low, and
ended up down by White Mountain Apache Tribe and
Gila Canyon. An absolutely
beautiful area that one needs to drive through
and see.
While the 4 of us were out delivering through
Navajo County, Katie, her mom, and Melissa B.,
were headed down to Nogales to bring over 170
bags of smiles to the
men and women serving Santa Cruz County.
